Linda Burchett

YOG 2016

Doctor and paediatric trainee

鈥淚鈥檓 still friends with many of the Yarra staff and students today.鈥

When Linda Burchett arrived at Yarra in Year 7, she found her place. A talented musician, Linda was attracted to the school because of the strength and diversity of its music program.

鈥淚鈥檝e played violin since I was a tiny tot and the music opportunities drew me to Yarra. Early on, I got to know people during rehearsals in the music building and I formed strong connections.鈥 she says.

鈥淢y violin teacher, Ms Heath, my trumpet teacher, Mr Turner, and Mr Templeton who ran the Music Department had a big impact on me. They stood apart because of their infectious love for what they did and their love of sharing that with me.鈥

Music remains a passion 鈥 Linda enjoys the discipline and freedom it offers and music鈥檚 ability to communicate emotions in a universal language.

鈥淎 musician can take the notes on a page and use the tools they have in their tool box to interpret that music. You invest in and share it in that moment with your audience. For me, music is a gift,鈥 says Linda.

Linda was also passionate about learning, so she thrived academically.

鈥淚 loved understanding new concepts and drawing out information. There were so many things to learn inside and outside the classroom. We were always able to give things a go and I loved to try my best, whatever I did. I was very happy to be at Yarra,鈥 says Linda.

鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 wait to wear the black jumper in Senior School!鈥

She also has many highlights that have remained with her, including starring as Dorothy in the Year 9 production of The Wizard of Oz 鈥 with her own dog taking the part of Toto! The Year 12 toasties are also a favourite memory.

After graduating, Linda studied medicine at Monash University and qualified as a doctor. She is now studying to be a paediatrician.

鈥淚 love medicine as a profession because you never stop gathering knowledge. I still have many years of learning ahead of me, but I鈥檝e found my niche in working with kids because I love the life they bring to my work. Being able to invest in their lives is a privilege,鈥 she says.

Linda can instantly recall the school motto and says to her it means lifting your eyes to find strength and comfort.

鈥淚n a self-centric world, lifting your eyes and looking at where you can help and be part of someone else鈥檚 journey is also important,鈥 she says.
